By 1891, W.S. Whitehead had replaced Boomer and hired an assistant Charles Joy, These changes were announced in the Idaho Daily Statesman: W. S. Whitehead, the druggist has secured a valuable assistant in the person of Mr. Chas. L. Joy, a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy. Mr. Joy is a man of long experience in the drug business and for several years was manufacturing chemist in a large Eastern laboratory, from whence he comes highly recommend. W.S. Whitehead Drugs located at 821 Main Street, Boise, Idaho. (Idaho Daily Statesman 1891).Charles Joy was a prominent Boise businessman who owned and operated several drug stores. He started the business in 1895 with a partner, establishing a store at 711 Main Street under the name Northrup & Joy. By 1898, he was the sole owner and eventually expanded to four locations across Boise. Joy sold the business and retired in 1929. He died just a few weeks later, on August 30, 1929. His main store at 1000 Main Street was later renamed McMahon's Drugs and then Ford Drug Company, becoming a long-standing local institution.
