Paraphrased from the “Historic Lewiston, Idaho
Facebook group: Two of Lewiston's premiere
pharmacists pose for a candid photo on Main
Street in 1897. Christian Osmers is shown
balancing himself on the handlebars, while John
Ray (right) looks on. The man on the left may have
been Robert Sims, who was a pharmacist at the
store. Osmers and Ray founded Lewiston's Owl
Drug in May 1895. The stone building in the
background was the old Lewiston National Bank
building at 4th and Main. The drug store in the
photo was owned by David Dent and Clayton
Butler. The Dent and Butler Building still stands at
the site. When this photo was taken, The Owl Drug
was located in a storefront on the south side of
Main. It moved to the new Weisgerber Building at
5th and Main in early 1905 and stayed there for
80 years.
