Henry Howes and Horace G. King were pioneer merchants of the Upper South Fork. After their frame store burned in the 1890 Wallace fire, they hurried to rebuild in brick. The Coeur d'Alene Miner said on September 13, 1890, that Howes and King "intend to occupy the first brick house in the town of Wallace, as they did the first frame building."
